Merry Oaks Garden Tour

8/11/2011 Thanks to Bruce, Scott, and Stephen for opening their gorgeous Merry Oaks gardens to 20 neighbors. We all came away inspired and educated as to what grows well in our local environment. Organized by MONA President, Cate Martin, the tour showed two good examples of gardens developed as multiple "rooms." Bruce, a landscape architect, explained how it is important to first have a written plan, taking into account sun/shade and perspective. The photo on the right (click to enlarge) shows an low maintenance area of heat resistant sedum appropriate for our hot, and sometimes dry summers.

Center: A quiet retreat near Scott's pond, surrounded by shrubs. A great place to unwind after work.

Left: At Bruce's the urn adds interest and contrasting foliage colors make each plant stand out.
